AC Milan/Barcelona Recap

Part I:
The Stalemate

Milan fielded a talented 4-3-3 that was flexible and pragmatic; they didn't worry about their formation so much as about their fundamentals.  They also fouled, wasted time, and played 73 long balls to get out of their half, pulled offside traps and mixed up their high pressure and back line locations.  There wasn't much defensively that Milan didn't use to throw Barca off.  Cynics will claim, of course, that there could have been two PKs awarded to the Catalonians, and more sinisterly, that the surface was of such low quality the game should never have been played in the San Siro.

On the more interesting side, Milan nearly never left players without cover, using their three attackers (much less so Ibrahimivich than Robinho and Boateng) to support the midfielders as we see here.  Being able to so quickly prevent Barca from establishing numerical advantages saved Milan time and again; how difficult this is to do against such talented players is almost in-describable.   A fine job of organizing by Allegri, getting his group of thoroughbreds to gut out 90 minutes of such hard work.  Sadly, they may be undone by their failure to score.  Getting a goal at the Camp Nou may be out of even their immensely talented reach.  Though they can take heart that a draw (other than 0-0) of any score sends them through to the semis.

In these three slides, we can see how hard Boateng works to stifle the Barca attack, and how Milan get enough players in front of the attackers to thwart the move...

Bosman Ruling

Global Economics, Justice And Football

Ah, the purity of sport.

10 years or so on, the Bosman ruling is still being felt.  Don't know what the Bosman ruling is?  Read up on the articles linked below.  Basically, it allowed free-agency in football in Europe.
The NY Times reports on the Bosman ruling, with a nice synopsis here from the BBC.

Interesting reading in the history of football especially with the current crop of Champions League teams still playing:

Marseille (France)
AC Milan (Italy)
Barcelona (Spain)
Real Madrid (Spain)
Chelsea (England)
Benfica (Portugal)
Bayern Munich (Germany)
APOEL (Cyprus...yup, Cyprus!)

Milan/Barca

An Appetizer

More complete thoughts coming soon, but just as a sample:

Milan attempted 73 "long passes" which was just about where whoscored.com anticipated; Barca hit only 48 longer balls.  Milan were batting .500 on these long passes, whereas Barca completed 65%.

Additionally, Barca completed 26% more passes in the San Siro than Milan attempted (453 to 615).  That said, the 0-0 first leg sets up a remarkable rematch in the Camp Nou...do Milan have the edge, knowing that a draw of any score (other than 0-0) puts them through, or do Barca, playing at home on a vastly superior pitch where they have been held scoreless exactly once this year, and that back in October?

Delicious matchup!

Olympic Soccer

Bad News, Good Matchup

USA Soccer will be missing half its teams at the London Games this summer.  With a late, added time goal, El Salvador eliminated the US under-23 team from the Olympic competition, 3-3.  The US needed, minimally, to advance to the semi-finals from the CONCACAF group stage to qualify for the Games.  The recap is here; love CONCACAF matchups, biting, eye gouging, the whole bit!  And this one was in Tennessee!   Frustrating to keep reading these recaps where "Americans" root for the visitors, too- I'm guessing not too many folks flew in from El Salvador for this one.  Akron coach Caleb Porter's job with the nats will be in question, to say the least.  Here's the connection to youth development, at least in one writer's eyes.  So that's a drag...but we've still got our women's team, thankfully, and hopefully they'll set the bitter disappointment of the last World Cup right!

The women are off to Japan shortly for matches on April 1 (V. Japan)  and 3 (V. Brazil) (both on ESPN2/ESPN3).

In Champions League news, tomorrow's tantalizing Milan/Barca tilt offers something most folks may not realize; a matchup of one team that plays short, tidy possession, and another that hits more long passes than any team in Europe.  Read more on this point here.   This will be the focus of a post here later this week.

Clint Dempsey and Fulham played a cagey, determined match at Old Trafford yesterday, and while Deuce had a couple good looks, he wasn't able to equalize and the Red Devils took a 1-0 decision.  A late  PK was not awarded to Fulham...but it would have been a fairly harsh call, despite being clearly foot-to-foot contact by the defender.  C'est la vie, Cottagers.
